Today's Key West Photo March 23 2006 Frozen Conch - Key West Florida This photo of my cousin Rico and is from a few weeks back and is an inside joke of sorts. Now Rico was born in Key West and they call us natives "Conchs" (Pronounced "Konk"). A Conch is also a type of shell fish, like a big oyster but not really. But it is a popular dish - Fried Conch, Conch Fritters, Conch Chowder, Conch Burgers and so on. Now, Conch is also an protected species down here and you can not catch them anymore. So conch meat is flown in from the Bahamas - frozen. So buying frozen conch is part of the every day Key West vernacular. Now, on the day I took the above shot Rico was all bundled up because it was 66 degrees, so I took this shot calling it "Frozen Conch". A play on words. Get it? Hahahahhaha!!! |
